    Jul 03,  · Even on well handled vinyl NM looking vinyl there could have been a worn out needle in its past. There's certainly goove burn that isn't as visible, but I've never had a record that looks greyish sound anything but trashed. All the 45s I inhereted as a child that got some spins on the close and play are clearly groove burned.

    Agreed, mastering and pressing have the biggest effect on sound quality, after that comes vinyl. Of course you have to have a good quality recording to begin with. The sound quality of black vinyl vs. coloured vinyl vs. picture discs has been discussed many times already, see for instance.

    Orient the needle arm so the pin is parallel to the groove and the cone lies tangent to the record. (To get a consistent sound, the pin needs to rest comfortably in the groove as the record rotates beneath it. Click to enlarge the image below.)
