I refer to Sir Malcolm Sargent's release of Walton's wonderful first symphony in B flat minor. There is a slightly odd history to this. Sargent's performance was reviewed in The Gramophone in the same month as one by Previn, a formidable exponent indeed of English music.5/5(3).

Sargent's recorded legacy has always felt somewhat sidelined; it's wonderful to see this diverse cross-section of his work. The variety of works on offer is very appealing; Sargent's specialities - the famous Messiah, Elijah, Belshazzar's Feast) rub shoulders with lesser known gems - the Rubbra and Bliss piano concerti, Coleridge-Taylor's Hiawatha's Wedding Feast, etc/5(18).

Catalogue No. (COLUMBIA) SAX CONDUCTED by SIR WILLIAM WALTON. DONALD BELL / THE PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA AND CHORUS. The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump.
